Description

Overview We present GROUNDEYE, a new model of radiative transfer over mountainous terrain, which considers for the first time the forward scattering properties of snow. Embedded in the surface process model Alpine3D, the new terrain radiation model GROUNDEYE receives interpolated real weather data with diffuse and direct broadband shortwave radiation for each pixel as well as a spatially variable plane albedo from the module SNOWPACK.

Format The GROUNDEYE model is written in c++, as is the entire environment of Alpine3d. The input and output data sets are .xlsx or .txt format, pre- and postprocessing including the generation of all figures is in .R format.

Structure In Data_Forward_Scattering.zip you will find all necessary data and model details to reproduce the results of the JGR publication "How forward-scattering snow and terrain change the Alpine radiation balance with application to solar panels"

  • Model Input Data contains the meteorological and topographic input data sets, the BRDF, and preprocessing scripts.

  • Model Code contains the full model Alpine3d including the radiative transfer module GROUNDEYE.
  • Model Output Data contains the results of the simulation of terrain irradiance and irradiance of solar panels; hourly resolution, 1. Sptember 2017 - 31. August 2018.
  • Measurements Solar Testsite contains information and measurements of the solar testsite at the Totalp near Davos, Switzerland.
  • Postprocessing contains all R-Scripts used for the analysis and plotting of the corresponding data.

In each of these folders you will find detailed information in the file 'About this Folder.txt'.
